SPACE SPECKS

I was contacted by Rick Dunbar of Dunbar Productions to help him get video effects and animations for his full length feature movie titled Space Specks. Eventually, I contributed so much, he named me Associate Producer and Lead Animator on the project. The project is mostly live action with a blend of 3D animation and visual effects. This work, of course, was an Internet collaborative effort, combining Rick's video with various 3D elements, animation, and effects, with a team assembled across the world.

I provided a number of supportive tasks, some of which are listed below with associated sample files for download. Basically, I contributed administrative support (organization and lead of animator and effect team contributors), 3D modeling, 3D animations, video effects, effects consultation and editing support. Below are some links to various efforts I contributed.

VIDEO

Teleportation

I was tasked to do the teleportation effect for various scenes, including multiple Blooper scenes. Effect includes removing individuals, digitally adding teleportation pad surface, and camera match movement.

Total Number of Effects Shots: 11

Total Length of Video Created: 2'33''

Intro

Realizing what the story was about, I offered to make a background nebula-like fly through for the intro credits. Effect made with Bryce 4, credits added in Adobe Premier.

Total Number of Effects Shots: 1

Total Length of Video Created: 1'05''

Admiral in Futuristic Space Station

I was tasked to take a green screened actor and put her behind a desk and in front a large window with various space elements occurring. This scene includes the work of additional modelers, though the final renderings and composition was done by me. This scene was rendered in multiple layers. The room itself is four layers (wall, desk, actor, and glass reflection), the planet, space station, satellite, and star background are all on different layers. The various ships that fly by are also on their own layer.

To note, this scene was created by a number of people using various software packages. The desk, wall, window, and some desk elemets were modeled in TrueSpace. The space station and satelite were modeled in Lightwave. Additional elements modeled in Carrara. Final scene setup and texturing done by me and rendered with Carrara.

Total Number of Effects Shots: 12 (includes multiple camera angles)

Total Length of Video Created: 2'01''

Screen for Speck Ship

A rendered image is being used for the Speck's cockpit/bridge as a background. To add more depth to the image, I created and animated screen for the monitors in the image.

Total Number of Effects Shots: 1

Total Length of Video Created: 0'6''

MODELING

Modeling support for various scenes, including space ship conceptualization and modeling. Although not used in the final renderings, some basic ship conceptualization and modeling was done by me to help support the animations team and to communicate ideas. Additionally, the Speck ship (below) was also modeled by me based on Rick's sketches.

Since this is a Science Fiction project based on a crew aboard an intersteller space craft, it is obvious that some planetary textures would be needed. I produced texturing for 4 distict and unique planets (including clouds, moons, and rings). Also a simple gas planet texture was made for the Admiral morgan scene above. Some sample renderings I used to communicate the textures are located on the right.
